Team Canada members Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont. and Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C. shot a combined 16-over par 584 at the 2012 Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup to earn a seventh place finish in the team competition at the par-71 Los Lagartos Country Club in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The Australian duo of Geoff Drakeford and Jordan Zunic claimed the team title with a four-day tally of 4-under par 564, besting runner-up New Zealand by 13 strokes. Australia captured the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup title for the fifth time in tournament history, earning the title for the first time since 2007.
Drakeford, meanwhile, claimed individual medalist honors with a score of 4-under par 280. Ranked No. 185 according to the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), Drakeford earned a two-stroke victory over Juan Alvarez of Uruguay.
"I am very excited about this win. We had that goal when we came here,” said Drakeford. “Today (Sunday), I started a bit nervous and I had quite the round complicated, but then I focused and I could recover with birdies at the turn. Also, winning in the individual classification was very important to me.”
“It was a very good day (Sunday). We've both played very well, especially Geoff,” said Zunic, who finished fifth in the individual competition. “Luckily, I found something in my swing the other day that I could fix. We had a fantastic finish in the later rounds and I'm very happy for this victory. The success of our country is due to good training programs and so we have very good players.”
Rank, a product of the University of Waterloo and the 2012 Canadian University/College champion, posted rounds of 76-73-72-70 over the four days of competition to finish tied for 11th at 7-over par 291. Svensson’s rounds of 74-76-69-74 earned the 2012 Canadian Junior Boys Championship winner a tie for 16th spot on the individual leaderboard at 9-over par 293.
