Any hopes of having a Canadian win the Australian Amateur were alleviated earlier this morning as Team Canada’s Garrett Rank lost 4&3 to New South Wales’ Brett Drewitt in Round of 64 play.

Rank, of Elmira, Ont., was the lone Canadian to advance to match play after firing rounds of 70-76 in the opening two rounds of stroke play qualifying. His tally of 2-over par was good enough for a T27 spot heading into match play elimination.

David Rose of West Vancouver failed to qualify for match play after recording rounds of 78-72 during stroke play qualifying. His 6-over par equaled a 73rd place finish.

The Australian Men's Amateur Championship is contested over 36-holes stroke play qualifying, with the leading 64 players progressing to elimination match play. It is open to players of all ages with an initial field size of 216 players. Its history dates back to 1894 when the (Royal) Melbourne Golf Club began holding an annual event known as the Victorian Golf Cup.

A lone Canadian took part in the Australian Women’s Amateur Championship. Mackenzie Rice tallied rounds of 90-85, leaving her 66th at +29. She did not advance to the event’s match play component.

The Australian Women's Amateur Championship is contested over 36-holes stroke play qualifying, with the leading 32 players progressing to elimination match play. It is open to players of all ages with an initial field size of 72 players. It was first played in 1894.

The event is being co-hosted by two clubs this year. The Commonwealth Golf Club in Melbourne and Woodlands Golf Club in Victoria.
