Cockerill , Woodland victorious at CN Future Links Western Championship

Aaron Cockerill and Megan Woodland captured the respective boys and girls divisions at the CN Future Links Western Championship

In the Junior Boys competition, Cockerill maintained his second-day lead as he fired a three-day score of 1-over par (73-69-75-217) to claim his first victory on the CN Future Links circuit.

Cockerill’s final-round 3-over par 75 included one birdie and four bogeys, giving him the victory.

“It feels awesome to win my first CN Future Links event,” Cockerill said. “I had a two stroke lead coming in to the final round, so I knew that I had to shoot for one or two under today to stay in the lead. I didn’t start out too well, but I pulled it together in the back nine.”

Following Cockerill closely as runner-up was Dallas Mengel of Saskatoon, who combined for a three day score of 4-over par (71-74-75-220), while Matt Williams of Calgary and Kowan O’Keefe of Blind Bay, B.C., tied for third with a three-day total of 6-over par (222).

Cockerill, Mengel, Williams, O’Keefe as well as Matt Haddad of Qualicum, B.C., and Brennan Kearney of Fort McMurray, Alta., have earned exemptions into the Canadian Junior Boys Championship, which will be held August 2-6 at Richmond Country Club in Richmond, B.C.

In the Junior Girls division, Megan Woodland, 18, held onto her second-round lead to earn her first CN Future Links Junior Girls victory with a tournament total of 16-over par (73-79-83-235).

“My strategy throughout the tournament was to stay focused and have good putting, which is exactly what I did on the first day,” Woodland said.

As junior girls’ champion of this CN Future Links event, Woodland earns an exemption into the Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship which will be held August 2-6 at Sawmill Creek Golf Resort in Camlachie, Ont.

“I’m anxious to play at the Junior Girls Championship in a few weeks, but really excited at the same time to be competing against some really good players,” added Woodland.

Following behind Woodland was Emery Bardock of Armstrong, B.C., who finished runner-up with a three day score of 26-over par (83-84-78-245) and Cari Chow of Colwood, B.C., who finished third with a three-day score of 30-over par (80-87-82-249).
