Kevin Carrigan of Victoria, B.C. carded a final-round 2-under par 70 to capture the 2012 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship at Point Grey Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.
A product of the University of Texas at Arlington, Carrigan, the reigning B.C. Men’s Mid-Amateur champion, finished at 3-under par 285 for the championship, besting three-time Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Dave Bunker of Woodbridge, Ont. by three strokes. Bunker posted a four-day tally of even-par 288 after carding a score of 1-under par 71 on Friday to earn runner-up honours.
“On the front-nine, I hit probably three clutch tee balls, and each of them found the fairway,” said Carrigan. “The idea is that you’ve got to keep your game plan the same until the last nine holes of a tournament, and that was the game plan all along. I got to the back-nine, gave one back on No. 11, but made a great eagle putt on No. 12. From there, it was just about controlling it and I found it.”
With the victory, Carrigan earned an exemption into the 2013 RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont., an opportunity that he is already looking ahead to.
“Like any golfer that’s ever played the game, it’s a dream to play on the PGA TOUR. I know that I’m not playing on the PGA TOUR, but I’m playing in a PGA TOUR event,” said Carrigan. “I’m just smitten right now. I’m over the moon. This is a great way to cap off the summer.”
Defending Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur champion Rob Couture of Trenton, Ont., now a resident of Dallas, Tex., finished T3 alongside Victoria, B.C.’s Craig Doell at 2-over par 290, while Tyler Frank of Saskatoon and Danny Lovell of Dallas, Tex. finished T5 at 3-over par 291.
Bunker, meanwhile, captured his sixth career Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship Mid-Master Division title, besting Doell by two strokes for the win.
Tom McKinlay Jr. of Lacombe, Alta. finished third at 9-over par 297, while Luc Guilbault of Drummondville, Que. was fourth at 13-over par 301.
John Bearrie of Arlington, Tex. rounded out the top-5 in the Mid-Master Division at 14-over par 302.
