Coming off top-20 individual finishes at the Juan Carlos Tailhade Cup, Team Canada’s Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont. and Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C. will square off against Argentina’s top amateur golfers and a talented international field as the 117th Argentine Amateur Championship is contested November 13-18 at Estancias Golf Club near Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Rank and Svensson will take to Estancias Golf Club on Tuesday morning for the first of two days of stroke-play qualifying. The pair will play 18 holes each day (Tuesday and Wednesday), with the top 64 players advancing to match play elimination which begins on Thursday. The final match will be played on Sunday over 36 holes.
A product of the University of Waterloo and the 2012 Canadian University/College Champion, Rank was also a finalist at the 2012 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship earlier this fall. Svensson, meanwhile, captured the 2012 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, earned runner-up honors at the 2012 Mexican Amateur, and was third at this year’s Toyota Junior Golf World Cup.
Considered one of the world’s premiere amateur golf events, the Argentine Amateur Championship is also one the oldest national amateur golf championships. The only amateur championships to supersede the Argentine Amateur Championship are the British Amateur Championship (1885), the Irish Amateur Open Championship (1892), the Irish Amateur Closed Championship (1893), the U.S. Amateur (1894) and the New Zealand Amateur Championship (1893).
