Canada remains in control of the overall position at Copa de Las Americas in Miami, FL., after solid third round play from the Canadian squad.
The foursome of Albin Choi, Corey Conners, Brooke Henderson and Augusta James combined to shoot a 5-over-par, 293 total on the TPC Blue Monster Course at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa during a windier third round. They currently lead team USA and team Mexico by five strokes in the overall competition at 19-over-par.
Choi, a native of Toronto, went under-par for the second consecutive day, posting eight birdies in his 2-under-par round of 70. His 2-under-par, 214 total currently leaves him tied for second in the men’s overall individual standings, one stroke back of Colombia’s Carlos Ernesto Rodriguez. Choi’s teammate Conners, of Listowel, Ont., carded an even-par round of 72 on the 7,099 yard course. The duo currently leads the men’s team portion of the tournament with an even-par, 432 total. They are two strokes clear of Colombia and Mexico.
Canadian teammates Brooke Henderson and Augusta James of Bath, Ont., fell into second place in the women’s team event after posting rounds of 75 and 76. Their 19-over-par, 451 total leaves them two strokes behind team USA. Henderson, a native of Smiths Falls, Ont., currently sits in fourth place in the individual standings for the tournament. Her 7-over-par, 223 total leaves her four strokes back of leaders Erynne Lee and Gabriela Lopez heading into the final round.
The Copa de las Americas overall trophy has been captured by Canada on two prior occasions. Canada won the overall title at the inaugural event in 2003 and also in 2005. The men have captured the team portion of the tournament twice while the women have hoisted the trophy once.
