At this time of year, most of us can’t help but find ourselves immersed in a variety of holiday season activities. From the holiday office party to decorating our homes and shopping for gifts, the season is in full swing - no off-season reverse pun intended.
As of late, my holiday season has been no different, with this past weekend filled with all three of the aforementioned activities. I did, however, manage to satisfy my golf fix by watching the movie, “Golf in the Kingdom”. The film is an adaptation of a novel of the same title and is a worthwhile watch/read for anyone looking for a more philosophical understanding of the game itself. You can find the trailer at the bottom of this blog. The book is available on amazon.com as well.
Before I begin my review of the film, or spoil it for those looking to watch it, one particular scene reflects on the values of honesty and integrity intrinsic to the sport. The main character, a young American embarking on his inaugural trip to the film’s self-proclaimed ‘birthplace of golf’, is periodically reminded of his (accurate) score, applicable penalty strokes and proper etiquette through his game, with the assistance of the local pro.
While the film provided a brief respite from my Christmas activities, it reminded me of what should be suggested reading for all golfers, regardless of age and skill level. A better understanding of the game will lead to further enjoyment of the game.
So, for the golfer on your shopping list who might need some assistance in counting their strokes next season, look no further than Golf Canada’s Rules and Handicap publications as great additions to any golfer’s library.
The publications listed below can be found online in our Golf Canada eStore or at your local golf shop or book retailer:
- Easy Guide to the Etiquette and Rules of Golf – A simplified and abbreviated version to the full Rules of Golf; slender enough to fit in your pocket for quick reference in common situations on the golf course.
- Rules of Golf and the Rules of Amateur Status – A must read for any golfer on and off the course; know the Rules and understand how they can help you in your game.
- Decisions on the Rules of Golf – Includes all of the content included in the Rules of Golf publication, as well as over 1,100 Decisions on the Rules in a Question/Answer statement format. An essential part of a golfer’s library when looking to expand on their knowledge of the Rules of the game.
- Golf Canada Handicap Manual – A comprehensive guide to Golf Canada’s Handicap System; a must for anyone serving on a club handicap committee or looking to become more involved in multiple facets of the game, including different forms of play.
Best of luck with the remainder of your holiday season preparations. Hopefully, you’ve crossed someone off your shopping list with these suggested readings – or added something to your own wish list.
On behalf of our team here at Golf House, have a safe and happy holiday season.
