During the last four days, I have had the opportunity to instruct our second level 4 Rules of Golf seminar in 2013 to Rules officials from the West Coast. Point Grey Golf & Country Club in Vancouver hosted the second installment of our Golf Canada Level 4 Rules of Golf seminars.
Royal Oaks Golf Club in Moncton, New Brunswick hosted our first Level 4 seminar a few weeks earlier, March 7-10.
Both seminars consisted of current certified Level 4 officials (national certification) wishing to brush up on their Rules knowledge and re-certify, as well as certified Level 3 officials looking to get certified at the highest level.
During the first three days, students were provided with a combination of classroom theory and interactive sessions furthering their understanding of the practical application of tournament officiating.
At level 4, we’ve really tried to enhance the participant experience through demonstration and role playing scenarios. It’s important for our certified officials to fully comprehend the Rules of Golf, but they also need to know how to interact with players and apply the Rules on the course.
The final day of each level 4 seminar is an opportunity for the participants to put their knowledge to the test and write the Level 4 Rules exam. It’s the culmination of countless hours spent studying the Rules of Golf.
To obtain a written certification mark (as recognized by Golf Canada), a student needs to achieve 85% or greater on this test. That mark doesn’t complete an official’s certification – practical hours (100) working as a Rules official (on course) are required to complete the process.
Level 4 is the pinnacle of our Rules Education Pathway and we encourage everyone that is passionate about golf to gain some level of Rules knowledge.
The fundamental purpose of the Rules Education Pathway is not necessarily to create Rules officials. We welcome those who are interested in becoming officials, but we also encourage all golfers to learn more about the Rules and enjoy the game even more by playing by them.
