Team Canada

About The Team

Team Canada, which began its full year of integrated men’s and women’s programs in 2003, is an integral part of Golf Canada’s commitment to developing top Canadian golf talent. The primary objective of the high performance program is to help 30 Canadians reach the LPGA and PGA TOUR by 2032. This will be achieved through a variety of program enhancements including the expansion of talent identification programs, building a well-resourced national team program, and working collaboratively with coaches, instructors and provincial associations across the country. More information on the high performance strategic plan can be found in this detailed update.

Within the national team program, players are selected to one of two teams, Team Canada and Team Canada – NextGen. Athlete selection takes place in November of each year and is based on objective performance results which are reviewed by a committee.

Each player commits to the program through an athlete agreement designed to create formal guidelines as to the expected behaviour for athletic excellence. Standards for participation, anti-doping, Code of Conduct, anti-harassment, travel, equipment and team uniforms are all clearly set out in these guidelines. Additionally, all members engage in an onboarding process that focuses on off-course health and wellbeing as Golf Canada strongly believes in supporting players as athletes and human beings.

The Team Canada program is year-round in scope and encompasses fitness, sports psychology, nutrition, technique, tactical execution, equipment and international competition. Each player receives a personalized program tailored to their needs and in turn, each team member is expected to be fully committed to the program with the long-term goal of becoming a member of the LPGA or PGA TOUR.

Members of Team Canada have the ability to be nominated to Sport Canada to become a carded member of the Athlete Assistance program, an initiative of Sport Canada to assist athletes in off-setting expenses to allow them to focus their time and energy on elite performance. Additionally, amateur members of Team Canada may receive needs-based financial aid support to help off-set competition expenses should their families have demonstrated need.
