FERNIE, B.C. – Logan Carver rebounded after a sloppy start to edge the competition in the final holes while Angela Zhang won the girls division at the Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship at Fernie Golf and Country Club on Thursday.

Carver shot a 3-over-par 73 to complete his wire-to-wire victory by one stroke. The 18-year-old, who held the lead through the first two rounds, recorded four bogeys on the front nine and two more immediately after making the turn to fall three strokes behind both Ty Steinbring and Ethan Choi.

Carver capitalized on late mistakes by the other two boys and finished the tournament going birdie-birdie and scraping out the victory.

Choi (Pincher Creek, Alta.) and Steinbring (Barrhead, Alta.) looked like they were clear of Carver heading down the stretch, but Choi carded two bogeys in his final four holes and Steinbring fell down the leaderboard due to a triple bogey on the 15th hole, opening the door for Carver’s dramatic finish.

Choi carded a final-round 72 to secure his second-place finish while Steinbring shot a 4-over-par 74 to finish in third, two strokes back of Carver.

Rounding out the top six finishers in the boys division who earned exemptions into the 2017 Canadian Junior Boys Championship on July 31-Aug. 3 at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club in Kingston, Ont., are: Bennett Ruby (Waterloo, Ont.), Hunter Thompson (Calgary, Alta.) and Michael Valk (Medicine Hat, Alta.).
Zhang shot a 1-under-par 71 to lock up the girls division and win her first Future Links, driven by Acura event.

The 15-year-old Vancouver native was leading after the first round on Tuesday, but she entered Thursday one shot back of Claire Lovan of Surrey, B.C. Zhang got off to a good start going bogey-free on the front nine and managed to hold off Lovan’s late surge to come away with a two-stroke victory.

Lovan, also 15, struggled to start her final round and carded two bogeys and a double bogey on holes four, five and six. After she made the turn, Lovan managed to close out her round bogey free and dropped in two birdies during her last four holes, but the push was too late to catch Zhang.

Rounding out the top six earning exemptions to the 2017 Canadian Junior Girls Champions on Aug. 1-4 at Camelot Golf & Country Club in Cumberland, Ont., are: Sydney Scraba (Calgary, Atla.), Tillie Claggett (Calgary, Alta.), Taylor Stone (Calgary, Alta.) and Stephanie Chelack (Calgary, Alta.).

FERNIE, B.C. – Logan Carver retained his lead in the boys division while Claire Lovan leaped to the top of the girls division at the Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship at Fernie Golf Club on Wednesday.

Carver shot a one-over-par 71 and maintained his lead by one stroke heading into the final round. Early on it looked as if the Calgary, Alta., native was going to extend his lead after he made the turn 3 under par with three birdies on his card, but the 18-year-old faltered on the back nine with a double bogey on the 12th hole and two bogeys in his final three holes.

Ty Steinbring of Barrhead Alta., played his way into second place at the end of round two. The 17-year-old carded five birdies and a single bogey en route to a 4-under-par 66 to bring him to 3 under on the tournament.

Sitting two strokes back of Carver is the Pincher Creek, Alta., product Ethan Choi who shot a bogey-free 68. Through two rounds, the only blemish on his scorecard is a double bogey on the eighth hole from round one.

Zander Park of Calgary, Alta., recorded the low round of the day. The 18-year-old shot a 65 – the same score Carver carded in round one – propelled five birdies and an eagle. He sits at T12, seven strokes back of the leader.

In the girls division, Claire Lovan from Surrey, B.C., shot a 3-under-par 69 to move her one stroke ahead of Tuesday’s leader Angela Zhang. Lovan enjoyed a rollercoaster-like round that included one eagle, five birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey and moved her to even par on the tournament.

“After I made the turn onto the back nine I was even par, which rarely happens for me,” she said, after her round. “Then I was able to really start making birdies after I made the turn and the eagle on hole 15 was huge for me.”

Zhang got off to a slow start and carded three bogeys in her first six holes, but the 15-year-old from Vancouver, B.C., managed to head to the back nine at 2 over par and recorded an important eagle on the final hole to keep her at 1 over for the tournament.

Rounding out the top three is Sydney Scraba from Calgary, Atla., who carded six birdies and seven bogeys to move her to three over on the tournament, three strokes back of Lovan.

FERNIE, B.C. – Logan Carver shot a 5-under-par 65 and Angela Zhang shot a 1-over-par 73 to lead their respective divisions at the Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship on Tuesday at Fernie Golf and Country Club.

Carver propelled himself to the top of the leaderboard after an incredible back nine where he carded five of his seven birdies, including the final three holes.

“It was just the last three holes when it all came together,” he said, after his opening round. “Standing on the 16th tee I was only 2 under and was coming off a hole where I three-putted from seven feet so I didn’t know how I was going to finish.

“But I hit some good iron shots those last three holes and they managed to go in, so it all worked out.”

The 18-year-old from Calgary, Alta., birdied four of his last five holes and carded just two bogeys during his impressive start to the tournament.

Sitting in solo-second behind Carver is Bradley McKeating, also from Calgary, Alta. He made the turn at even par after registering two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine before he managed to play bogey-free on the back and finish three strokes off the leader.

Jammed up in a four-way tie for third place at 1 under par are Jace Ouellette (Red Deer, Alta.), Dylan Henderson (Waterloo, Ont.), Hunter Thompson (Calgary, Alta.) and Brodie Shields-Tyler (Calgary, Alta.).

In the girls division, Zhang holds onto her spot at the top of the leaderboard by just one stroke. The 15-year-old from Vancouver, B.C., headed into the final eight holes at 3 under par but stumbled down the stretch with two bogeys and a double-bogey.

“The course was in really good condition today,” she said. “The chances were definitely there so if you could just hit it solid and be patient and you could get a really low score.”

Sydney Scraba, from Calgary, Alta., sits one stroke back of Zhang after she managed to card four birdies in her opening round, but four bogeys and a double-bogey found her settling into solo-second with a 2-over-par 74.

Taylor Stone (Calgary, Alta.), Claire Lovan (Surrey, B.C.) and Jennifer Gu (West Vancouver, B.C.) all shot 3 over par and sit in a three-way tie, two strokes behind Zhang after round one.

FERNIE, B.C. – Golf Canada nears the end of its 2017 junior golf championship season as the Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship is set to take place at Fernie Golf and Country Club.

With support from British Columbia Golf, the Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship is the fifth of six regional junior championships presented in partnership with Acura. The 54-hole stroke play tournament will begin with a practice round on July 10 before the tournament gets underway with round one on July 11.

Founded in 1918, Fernie Golf and Country Club will be hosting its first ever Future Links Championship. With a varied terrain and stunning view of the Rocky Mountains, the course features an aesthetic charm accentuated by luscious greens and silica sand bunkers.

“Golf Canada and British Columbia Golf are thrilled to present the 2017 Future Links, driven by Acura Western Championship in Fernie,” said Greg Moody, the Tournament Director from British Columbia Golf. “We are optimistic that the tricky course at Fernie Golf and Country Club will challenge Canada’s premier junior golfers and allow them to demonstrate their skills.”

The field will consist of 85 junior golfers in the Junior Boys Division with the top six earning exemptions into the 2017 Canadian Junior Boys Championship on July 31-Aug. 3 at Cataraqui Golf & Country Club in Kingston, Ont. A tie for the sixth position will be decided by a playoff following the conclusion of play.

The Junior Girls Division will consist of 16 golfers with the top six (including ties) earning an exemption into the 2017 Canadian Junior Girls Championship on Aug. 1-4 at Camelot Golf & Country Club in Cumberland, Ont.

The final Future Links, driven by Acura Championship of 2017 will conclude the regional championship series this summer.

Andrew Spalti of Vancouver, B.C.
The 17-year-old has placed inside the top 25 of each of his six events this season. He won the MJT Vancouver Championship back in March and is currently ranked at No. 34 on the Future Links, driven by Acura Order of Merit.

Estevan, Sask. – Ryan McMillan came from behind while Chaewon Baek went wire-to-wire to win the Future Links, driven by Acura Prairie Championship at TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club on Thursday.

McMillan, who started the day T2, shot a bogey-free, 4-under-par 68 to close out the tournament 5 under par. The 17-year-old from Winnipeg, Man., made the turn at 1 under par in a tie with Tayden Wallin and then carded three birdies in five holes to cruise to the finish line.

Kade Johnson, from Yorkton, Sask., finished in solo-second after he made an eagle on the par-5 15th hole. The 18-year-old was in a three-way tie after the seventh hole, but made a double-bogey on the par-3 eighth hole and ultimately finished four strokes back of McMillan.

Wallin started his round at the top of the leaderboard and got off to a strong start with two birdies in the first five holes. After he carded a triple bogey he bounced back and scored two birdies after he made the turn, but he struggled in the final six holes where he went 5 over par.

Rounding out the top six finishers in the boys division who earned exemptions into the 2017 Canadian Junior Boys Championship on July 31-Aug. 3 at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club in Kingston, Ont., are: Callum Davision from Duncan, B.C., Andrew Campbell and Josh Nagy, who are both from Saskatoon, Sask.

In the girls division, Baek completed her wire-to-wire victory with a 5-over-par 77 in her final round. The 13-year-old from Langley, B.C., carded a triple-bogey on the par-5 fifth hole but had already built up a comfortable cushion between second place.

Angela Arora, from Surrey, B.C., shot the low round of the day in the girls division with an even-par 72 and jumped up the leaderboard to finish in solo-second place, nine shots behind Baek. She got off to a slow start with two bogeys in her first three holes, but a bogey-free back nine paired with two birdies got her back in it.

Vaijayanti Bharkhada finished her tournament with an 80, moving her to 23 over par for the tournament and a solo-third finish.

Rounding out the top six earning exemptions to the 2017 Canadian Junior Girls Champions on Aug. 1-4 at Camelot Golf & Country Club in Cumberland, Ont., are: Samantha Copeland of Calgary, Alta., Chloe Sies of Melville, Sask., and Hannah MacNeil of Shaunavon, Sask.

Wallin started the day two back off the leader and, after a bogey free front nine, the 18-year-old from Humbolt, Sask., made the turn at 1 under par before he carded two birdies and an eagle to offset his three bogeys. His back-to-back opening round 70’s give him a three-shot cushion at the top of the leaderboard.

“I didn’t realize that today was going to turn out as well as it did,” he said, after the low-round of the day. “I was making quite a few pars and my putts were going in, but I guess the eagle on the back nine really jump-start the round and put me in a good position at the end of the day.”

Kade Johnson, from Yorkton, Sask., and Ryan McMillian, from Winnipeg, Man., shot matching even-par 72’s to enter the final round within striking distance of the lead. The pair are 1 under par for the tournament.

Jacob Kydd entered round two with a two-shot lead after his opening round 68, but got off to a rough start with a bogey on the first hole that lead to a 9-over-par 81 on Wednesday.

In the girls division, Baek carded a 6-over-par 78, a score seven shots higher than her opening round, but was still able to hold on to her lead after all the golfers struggled on Wednesday. The 13-year-old recorded four bogeys on the front nine and managed to only card a single birdie but still entered the clubhouse with a 10-shot lead.

Vaijayanti Bharkhada, from Brampton, Ont., is the closest to Baek after her 10-over-par 82, and Samantha Copeland rounds out the top three in the girls division, two shots back of Bharkhada.

Estevan, Sask. – Jacob Kydd shot the low round of the day for the boys and Chaewon Baek recorded the only score under par for the girls as the two lead their respective divisions after round one at the Future Links, driven by Acura Prairie Championship at TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club on Tuesday.

Kydd carded a 4-under-par 68 while scoring six birdies in his stellar opening round.

“It feels awesome, it’s my lowest round ever,” said the 17-year-old, from Regina, Sask. “I felt really good right from my very first tee shot. After that, the putts just starting going in for me. I didn’t three putt all day and knew that I had the potential to record a really low score.”

They only blemish on Kydd’s personal best was a double bogey right after he made the turn onto hole 10, but he managed to stay out of danger by scoring three birdies in the following five holes.

Three players are within striking distance of the leader after round one.

Tayden Wallin, from Humboldt, Sask., holds on to second place after he finished his opening round two under, and Kade Johnson (Yorkton, Sask.) and Ryan McMillian (Winnipeg, Man.) sit deadlocked in third after they shot the only other two rounds under par in the boys division.

Callum Davison, the 2016 Future Links Quebec Champion, recorded an even-par 72 and is four shots back of Kydd in fifth place.

In the girls division, Baek shot a 1-under-par 71 to secure her spot at the top of the standings. The 13-year-old from Langley, B.C., got off to a rough start with back-to-back bogeys on holes one and two, but she followed it up with an eagle and a birdie to bring her under par.

“The first two holes I three-putted both times but then I made an eagle on three to bring me back into it,” she said, after posting the only round below par in the girls division. “I just tried to not give it up from that point forward.”

Samantha Copeland, from Calgary, Alta., is the closest to Baek after she shot a 4-over-par 76, while Vaijayanti Bharkhada shot a 77 to round out the top three girls.

With support from Golf Saskatchewan, the Future Links, driven by Acura Prairie Championship is the fourth of six regional junior championships presented in partnership with Acura. The 54-hole stroke play tournament will begin with a practice round on July 3 before the tournament gets underway with round one on July 4.

After a 2011 flood, the back nine of TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club was redesigned by Les Furber. Now, the course features scenic hills with a lot of natural hazards and will be hosting its first Future Links, driven by Acura Championship.

“Golf Canada and Golf Saskatchewan are very excited to present the 2017 Future Links, driven by Acura Prairie championship in Estevan,” said Brian Lee, Tournament Director for Golf Saskatchewan. “We are looking forward to great competition amongst Canada’s premier junior golfers as they navigate the challenging grounds at TS&M Woodlawn Golf Club.”

A tie for the sixth position will be decided by a playoff following the conclusion of play.

ABOUT THE COURSE

Back nine was redesigned by Les Furber in 2013 after a flood in 2011.

Céleste Dao went wire-to-wire on Sunday to win the Future Links, driven by Acura Quebec Championship, while William Duquette cruised to victory in the boy’s division at Club de golf Milby.

Dao finished her championship run with a 1-under-par 72 – her second under-par score of the tournament. The 16-year-old started her up-and-down final round by only recording one par on the front nine before she calmed her game down after the turn.

“My start was kind of tough,” she said, after her victory. “I didn’t drive the ball very well and it took me a couple of holes to figure my swing out. I started with a lot of bogeys and birdies, but didn’t stop attacking the pin. In the middle of my round I decided to hit my three-wood and cruised in from there.”

The move to her three-wood paid instant dividends as she recorded a par on each of the first five holes after heading to the back nine.

Ellie Szeryk, from London, Ont., maintained her second-place finish with a 4-under-par 69 – the lowest score of the tournament in the girl’s division – which saw her finish at 1-over-par for the tournament, four strokes back of Dao. She made only two bogeys on Sunday and recorded an eagle on the par-5 fifth hole.

Brigitte Thibault finished in third place at 3 over par. The Rosemere, Que., native shot a 70 on Sunday after she recorded four birdies in five holes on the back nine.

Rounding out the top six, all of-whom are advancing to the 2017 Canadian Junior Girls Championship held Aug. 1-4 at Camelot Golf & Country Club in Cumberland, Ont., are: Haley Yerxa (+5) from Ottawa, Ont., Sarah Beqaj (+9) from Toronto, Ont., and Emily Zhu (+10) from Richmond Hill, Ont.

In the boy’s division, Duquette cruised to the victory with a comfortable seven-shot lead. He was the co-leader after the first round and then captured the outright lead by carding a 6-under-par 67 in his second round. On Sunday, he shot a 2-under-par 71 to notch his third consecutive round under par.

“I was just trying to play safe today,” he said. “I wanted to hit a lot of greens and that’s what I did. I made a lot of putts in the first five holes and that really helped me through the whole day. I had a big lead after two rounds, so that made it a little bit easier.”

Finishing in second after a 3-under-par 70 was Jared Dandy from Vankleek Hill, Ont. The 18-year-old registered four birdies on Sunday paired with only one bogey – on the final hole of the tournament.
Christopher Vandette, the 15-year-old from Beaconsfield, Que., who won the Ontario Championship last week, scored a 5-under-par 68 to move him to even par for the tournament and into a tie for third with Louis-Alexandre Jobin-Colgan.

Eric Byun dropped a couple of spots after his 2-over-par 75 on Sunday. The Richmond Hill, Ont., product finished in sole possession of fifth at 1 over par for the tournament.

Three players participated in a playoff to determine the sixth golfer in the boy’s division to earn an exemption for the 2017 Canadian Junior Boys Championship held July 31 – Aug. 3 at Cataraqui Golf & Country Club in Kingston, Ont.,

Callum Davison, the event’s defending champion, outlasted Shaun Margeson, from Falls River, N.S., and Antoine Roy, from Rimouski, Que., after two playoff holes. Davison, from Duncan B.C., shot 1 under par to force the extra holes while both Margeson and Roy were 2 over on the day, allowing Davison to sneak into the final exemption spot.

SHERBROOKE, Que. – William Duquette’s 67 put him comfortably at the top of the leaderboard, while Dao held on to her lead in the girl’s division at the Future Links, driven by Acura Quebec Championship on Saturday at Club de golf Milby.

Duquette extended his lead with a 6-under-par 67 to move him to 8 under on the tournament heading into the final round. The 16-year-old made the turn at 1 under before dominating the back nine with two eagles on the par-5 17 and par-4 13.

“On 13 I drove it on the green and then made the putt for eagle,” he said, after his tournament-low round. “My putting was really good all day. I made a lot of par saves and a lot of birdies.”

Eric Byun, from Richmond Hill, Ont., is the closest to Duquette after his 1-under-par round on Saturday, but he remains seven strokes back of first, sitting at 1 under total for the tournament. There are four players currently tied in third at even par through two rounds: Jared Dandy (75, 71), Shaun Margeson (73, 73), Charles-Eric Belanger (76, 70) and Antoine Roy (72, 74).

In the girl’s division, Dao sits at the top of the leaderboard for the second consecutive day. Her 1-over-par 74 on Saturday moves her to 2 under for the tournament and she starts Sunday with a comfortable six-stroke lead.

The 16-year-old was making a bid for her second consecutive score under par, but ran into trouble with bogeys on her final two holes.

Haley Yerxa, from Ottawa, Ont., holds onto second place after she shot 3 over par in round two. She started the day four strokes back and looked like she was going to dip down the standings after having trouble on the par-3 12th hole where she carded a double-bogey, but rebounded by making birdies on 15 and 18 to stay in the hunt.

Also starting the day four back of Dao was Ellie Szeryk from London, Ont. She managed to make the turn at even par but struggled on holes 10 to 12 where she recorded a bogey on each. She ended round 2 with a 77 and sits at 5 over for the tournament, seven strokes off the lead.

The top six finishers in the Boys Division will earn exemptions into the 2017 Canadian Junior Boys Championship held on July 31-Aug. 3 at Cataraqui Golf and Country Club in Kingston, Ont. The top six in the Girls Division will earn exemptions into the 2017 Canadian Junior Girls Championship held Aug. 1-4 at Camelot Golf & Country Club in Cumberland, Ont.
