NextGen Fall Series East Championship set for Club de Golf Milby
Sherbrooke, Que. – The NextGen Fall Series East Championship, fueled by JOURNIE Rewards begins this week with a field of 99 amateur golfers set to compete at Club de Golf Milby in Sherbrooke, Que.
The starting field will feature – 81 Junior Boys and 18 Junior Girls competing for three spots each into their respective Canadian Junior Championships next summer.
“The NextGen Fall Series East Championship, fueled by JOURNIE Rewards provides a great chance for players to showcase their talents on a national stage throughout the fall months of the season,” said Golf Canada Tournament Director, Sam Meek. “Golf Canada is thrilled to welcome the field to the Club de Golf Milby & look forward to crowning our champions come Sunday.”
Practice rounds are scheduled for Thursday, September 21 before the official 54-hole tournament gets underway on September 22. The tournament will conclude on September 24 with an awards ceremony following play.

Club de Golf Milby is located just outside Sherbrooke in the Eastern Townships and offers golfers an interesting challenge in a beautiful setting featuring wooded areas, rivers and hills. Designed by Howard Watson, the club opened in 1964 and is known for its large undulating greens and is considered to be among the top semi-private golf courses in the province of Quebec. The club has hosted several prestigious tournaments in prior years including, the Canada Games in 2013 and the Quebec Open in 1992 and 1993, along with several university and high school tournaments.
The NextGen Fall Series East Championship is one of Golf Canada’s eight regional junior championships presented in partnership with JOURNIE Rewards. Andreas Diogenous of Cambridge, Ont. and Kelly Zhao of Richmond Hill, Ont. won their respective divisions in the 2022 NextGen Fall Series East Championship.
Following this week’s tournament, there will be one final stop on the NextGen Series schedule for this year with the NextGen Fall Series West Championship, taking place from October 5 – 7 at The Hills at Portal Golf Club in Surrey, B.C.

Basadur and Baker victorious at NextGen Atlantic Championship fueled by JOURNIE Rewards
Charlottetown, P.E.I. — Dougie Basadur and Abbey Baker won their respective divisions to claim the NextGen Atlantic Championship, fueled by JOURNIE Rewards today at Avondale Golf Club in Charlottetown, P.E.I.
The 54-hole stroke play competition marked the last tournament in the NextGen Championship series and featured a starting field of 76 male and female golfers. There was a total of 55 boys and 21 girls competing.
Going into the final round, Basadur was in third place chasing Justin Repovs who held the lead after the opening two rounds. Basadur of Fonthill, ON., shot a 1-over 73 on Thursday’s final round to finish the tournament at 1-under and secure the NextGen Atlantic Championship and a spot in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
“This win means a lot, coming to Prince Edward Island to get the job done was a lot of fun. I made a double bogey on a par 5 and I didn’t get frustrated or get down on myself, I just thought about how the only shot I can control is the next one which kept me calm,” said Basadur.
Abbey Baker, of Halifax, NS., shot an even par 72 during the final round on Thursday to win the Junior Girls division by two shots over Bridget Yu of Richmond Hill, ON. Yu held the lead over Baker heading into the third round after shooting a 2-under 70 on Wednesday. Baker, who maintained second place through the first two rounds, finished the tournament at 4-over to secure first place in the NextGen Atlantic Championship.
“This win means a lot to me, it’s very special to win my last Atlantic of my junior career,” said Baker. “Today was definitely stressful as I had to overcome four shorts with my putting not being the best, but I was able to overcome it in the fairways and hit the greens.”

Golf Canada’s 2023 championship season continues on Monday, July 17 Avondale Golf Club in Charlottetown, P.E.I. with the NextGen Atlantic Championship, fueled by JOURNIE Rewards.
The 54-hole stroke play competition gets underway with a practice round on Monday, July 17 and championship rounds beginning on Tuesday, July 18. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the top 57 Junior Boys and top 21 Junior Girls, including ties, for the final round which wraps up on Thursday, July 20.
The starting field will feature 78 male and female competitors – 57 Junior Boys and 21 Junior Girls – vying for a spot into their respective Canadian Junior Championship later this summer.
The top eight players in the Junior Boys division will earn exemptions into the 2023 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, August 14-17, at North Bay Golf and Country Club Ltd. in North Bay, Ont. The summer NexGen schedule will wrap up at Avondale Golf Course, known to have some of the best designs in the Maritimes. Its challenging bent grass greens, tees and dwarf blue grass fairways make for an exceptional test for the country’s best junior golfers.

Dao and Tavares victorious at NextGen Quebec Championship fueled by JOURNIE Rewards
Magog, Que —Henry Dao and Léonie Tavares won their respective divisions to claim the NextGen Quebec Championship, fueled by JOURNIE Rewards at the Club de golf Venise in Magog, Que.
The 54-hole stroke play competition marked the fifth tournament in the NextGen Championships and featured a starting field of 140 male and female golfers.
Dao from Laprairie, Que., shot a final round 73 to finish atop of the leaderboard after maintaining the lead throughout the tournament to secure the NextGen Quebec Championship and a spot in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
“First off, I always drive well so that really helped me. I always had inside foot wedges to attack the pin and I did that well and sunk my putts. I needed to putt well and that’s been my weakness, but it has been better this week which really helped me.” Said Dao.
After opening the tournament with 4-under, 68, Dao maintained his lead shooting a 5-under, 67 on Wednesday and finished the tournament at 8-under to secure his win. “This is really a confidence booster, I’ve kind of been in the slumps and not playing my best but I’ve been working with my new coach and it’s been working really well. This is a really good result for me and my family who encourage me,” Dao added.
Tavares from St-Jerome, Que., finished round three shooting a 4-under 68 to hold off Carlee Meilleur to secure her win by one stroke.
Tavares opened the final round tied for fourth and made her way back up the leaderboard to make a come back to earn the NextGen Quebec Championship. “This means a lot to me because I worked a lot for this tournament. This weekend was really tough for me because I worked a lot of hours and I wanted to have a great tournament and play under par and it worked and I’m very happy,” Tavares said.
Tavares added “I’m going to work on my short game so my putting can be more precise and my irons are going to be better. I practiced this morning and it was great, so was my third round.”

The 54-hole stroke play competition is currently underway with championship rounds beginning on Tuesday, July 4. After the second round on Wednesday July 5th, there will be a cut where half of each division will make it through to Thursday’s final round.
The starting field will feature 140 male and female competitors – 103 Junior Boys and 37 Junior Girls – vying for a spot into their respective Canadian Junior Championship later this summer.

The Magog course will deliver a test for NextGen competitors, while presenting views of both the clubs remarkable lake fronts.

Fisher and Korman win NextGen Prairie Championship
Nipawin, Sask. —Kye Fisher and Cala Korman won their respective divisions to claim the NextGen Prairie Championship, fueled by JOURNIE Rewards at Evergreen Golf and Curling Club in Nipawin, Sask.
The 54-hole stroke play competition marked the fourth tournament in the NextGen Championship series and featured a starting field of 67 male and female golfers. There was a total of 52 boys and 15 girls competing.
Going into the final round tied for first, Fisher of Leduc, Alb., shot a 5-under 67 in Sunday’s final round to secure first place in NextGen Prairie Championship and a spot in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
Fisher and Seth Mottershead-Yee were tied for the lead heading into Sunday at 1-under. On Sunday, Fisher carded six birdies including three straight on holes four through six on his way to a 67 to pull ahead for the win. Mottershead-Yee shot 2-over 74 during the final round on Sunday to finish second in the NextGen Prairie Championship.
“I’m super happy, Golf Canada always hosts great events this was definitely a hump I wanted to get over. I definitely played it a little bit safer on the back nine, I didn’t hit it as close as I hit on the front nine. I knew the course record was in play so I wanted to get that down,” said Fisher.
Korman, of Killarney, MB, shot a final round 1-under, 71 on Sunday to win the Junior Girls division by three shots over Hallie Crozier of Regina. Korman trailed Addison Kartusch after Friday’s opening round by three shots. She was able to pull within two of Kartusch and one shot behind Crozier heading into Sunday’s final round. “I changed my routine, I was a little too aggressive off the tee, so adjusting that really helped,” said Korman regarding changes following Friday’s opening round. On Sunday, Korman recorded five birdies to pull ahead of Crozie and Kartusch and earn the championship. Korman is excited to win and advance to the Canadian Junior Girls Championship next month.

Athabasca, Alb. — After the final round on Sunday, Jaiden Koonar and Anne-Sophie Bourgault won their respective divisions to claim the NextGen Western Championship, fueled by JOURNIE Rewards at Athabasca Golf Club in Athabasca, Alb.
The 54-hole stroke play competition marked the third tournament in the NextGen Championship series and featured a starting field of 112 male and female golfers. There were a total of 78 boys and 34 girls competing.
Konnar of Calgary, shot a 2-under 70 in Sunday’s final round to hold off Christian Flick by one shot to secure the NextGen Western Championship and a spot in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
Koonar and Flick were tied for the lead heading into Sunday at 1-under. Kooner shot an even par 72, while Flick shot a 2-under 70 on Saturday. On Sunday, Kooner would pull ahead after recording four birdies on his way to shooting a 2-under 70 to finish the final round on Sunday atop the leaderboard.
Bourgault of Gatineau, Que. was co-leader after Friday but fired a 1-under 71 on Saturday to take the solo lead heading into the final round. On Sunday, she finished strong with birdies on 14 and 16 to shoot a final round of 1-over 74 to secure the NextGen Western Championship by six shots over Eileen Park.

Ibit and Xu victorious at NextGen Ontario Championship fueled by JOURNIE Rewards
Peterborough, Ont. —Isaiah Ibit and Alissa Xu won their respective divisions to claim the NextGen Ontario Championship, fueled by JOURNIE Rewards at the Peterborough Golf and Country Club on Sunday.
The 54-hole stroke play competition marked the second tournament in the NextGen Championships and featured a starting field of 156 male and female golfers.
Ibit of Orleans, Ont., shot a final round 70 to hold off Anthony Jomphe by three shots to secure the NextGen Ontario Championship and a spot in the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
After opening the tournament with an even score Friday, Ibit bounced back to enter the final round on Sunday atop the leaderboard by firing a five-under-par 66 on Saturday.
“After a great round yesterday, I really wanted to capitalize and come out with a win today. I started off really nice right off the bat and continued that to the back nine. Things started to go off the rails a little bit, but I was able to bring it back,” said Ibit. I knew that I definitely had the lead but there was someone who was posting some really good numbers, since they’re all good players, I’m really happy I was able to just keep in control of my emotions toward the stretch.”
Alissa Xu led from start to finish, with scores from both the first and second rounds of 70 and closed with two-over-par, on her way to a two-shot victory and earn the NextGen Ontario Championship. “Its nice to see the results of all my hard work, all the coaching and struggles I went through actually paid off,” said Xu.
Xu added “there was definitely more pressure toward the end but I’m glad that I was able to figure it out. I tired my best to focus on what was going on in the moment as opposed to what had happened in the past.”
In the Junior Boys division, the top eight players earn exemptions into the 2023 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, August 14-17, at North Bay Golf and Country Club Ltd. in North Bay, Ont.
