Round 3 suspended at 8:55 p.m. EDT, will resume on Friday at 7 a.m. EDT
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – When the horn sounded to suspend play just before 9 p.m. Lauren Kim and Rina Kawasaki found themselves tied atop the leaderboard at the 112th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship, presented by BDO at The Toronto Golf Club in Mississauga, Ont. on Thursday.
For the second consecutive day, play was suspended due to darkness (8:55 p.m. EDT), with Kim (Surrey, B.C.) and Kawasaki (Japan) both at 4-under. The pair were tied for the lead at 1-under with Kylie Chong of Torrance, Calif. heading into the start of the third round. Kawaski got through 16 holes and sits 3-under for her round, with Kim having a putt on no. 16 awaiting her Friday morning.
Kim, the 2023 champion and Team Canada member is also 3-under for her round and was able to manage the course well again today. She added that she is “rolling with the punches” when it comes to consecutive stoppages.
“I played the course really well, my course management has been really good, and I’ve been hitting the shots where I need to hit them and just trusting my putting,” said Kim.
Kim didn’t want to putt in the dark, so she called it a night but is happy where things stand currently after carding five birdies in her third round thus far.
“It’s great to be in this position and I’m just going to keep having fun,” she said with a smile.
Kawasaki said she “was feeling the fatigue” through her front nine on Thursday afternoon after having to play the morning as well. However her scorecard showed otherwise as any miss hit was saved, and she was able to get on good run on the back nine with four birdies including three straight from 14 through 16 to move into the co-lead with Kim. Kawasaki will begin her morning with the par 3 17th on Friday.
Chong currently sits solo third at 2-under through 15 and is currently playing in a group with Kim.
Angelina Tolentino of Mount Laurel, N.J. fired the low round of the day and currently the tournament with a 5-under 66, carding seven birdies on Thursday. Tolentino, who is heading into her junior year at Vanderbilt University soared up the leaderboard and now sits T5 at 1-over with Jie-En Lin of Chinese Taipei.
The second round of play concluded just after 2 p.m. EDT with 76 players in the field of 156 making the cut at 11-over, with the third round beginning at 3 p.m. EDT. Round three will resume at 7 a.m., with 13 players having two holes remaining. The final round will follow and is expected to begin at 9 a.m. on Friday.
Along with earning the Duchess of Connaught Gold Cup, the winner will receive an exemption into the field for the 2026 CPKC Women’s Open at Royal Mayfair Golf Club in Edmonton, Alta., August 19 – 23 and the 2026 U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in Ooltewah, Tenn., August 4 – 9.
Having debuted in 1901 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Que., the Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship stands as one of the oldest amateur golf events in the world. Current LPGA Tour stars Ariya Jutanugarn (2012), Brooke Henderson (2013), Hye-Jin Choi (2016), Jennifer Kupcho (2017), and Yealimi Noh (2018) have all lifted the Duchess of Connaught Gold Cup, presented annually to the Canadian Women’s Amateur champion – though none have matched Marlene Stewart Streit’s 11 victories that helped her become the first-ever Canadian inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame (2004).
