Titleist introduces new Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls
FAIRHAVEN, Mass.– It’s hard to belive 15 years have passed since the first Titleist Pro V1 was introduced.
It was in October 2000 when the original Pro V1 prototype first appeared on the PGA Tour at the Invensys Classic in Las Vegas. Forty-seven players put the ball in play that week, marking one of the largest pluralistic shifts of equipment at one event in golf history. In March 2001, just months after launching to golf shops, Titleist Pro V1 became the best-selling golf ball in the marketplace.
“The launch of Pro V1 was especially significant in that for the very first time the best performing golf ball for tour players was also the best performing golf ball for all golfers,” said Mary Lou Bohn, Vice President of Titleist Golf Ball Marketing and Communications. “You no longer had to choose between distance over short-game control, or durability over soft feel. There were no trade-offs. Pro V1 delivered total performance.”
Pro V1 and Pro V1x (which launched in 2003) have been the most played golf balls at every level of competitive golf and the best-selling models around the world ever since.
The new 2015 Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x models, available in golf shops beginning January 30, are the result of a continuous process rooted in rigorous research and development, technological advancements, comprehensive player testing and validation, and precision manufacturing.
Designed for all golfers seeking to shoot lower scores, 2015 Pro V1 and Pro V1x deliver exceptional distance with consistent flight, more short game control and even softer feel from a new, patented urethane elastomer cover formulation, and long lasting durability.
Comparatively, Pro V1 has a softer feel, slightly more long game spin and a penetrating trajectory for a shallower angle of descent for more roll. Pro V1x offers a slightly firmer feel, lower long game spin and launches higher with a steeper angle of descent.
The total performance of Pro V1 and Pro V1x tee-through-green – providing the best combination of distance, flight, short-game scoring control and feel – makes them the best fit for any golfer.
“Golfers often ask us what sets Pro V1 and Pro V1x apart from other golf balls. You can’t just point to one or two things,” said Bill Morgan, Senior Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball R&D. “The difference is everything. We have more people with more experience designing and making golf balls, the largest intellectual property portfolio and the most sophisticated precision manufacturing processes. The 2015 Pro V1 and Pro V1x are the culmination of all that knowledge and all of that technology. The original Pro V1 was revolutionary, no question, but we’ve learned a lot in the last 15 years and these new Pro V1 models are the best we’ve ever made.”
The Titleist Golf Ball R&D team, driven by a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation, is made up of chemists, physicists, mathematicians, computer scientists, engineers and technicians, as well as PGA Professionals and turf management specialists. Due to their work, Titleist owns the industry’s largest portfolio of golf ball intellectual property with more than 1,000 patents. Since 2010, Titleist has been awarded nearly 50 percent of all golf ball patents issued in the United States. There are more than 100 patents that cover the technologies and manufacturing processes for 2015 Pro V1 and Pro V1x combined.
Before being introduced to the market, new Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls are tested and validated by golfers at every level of the game, from the world’s best tour players to amateurs of all skill levels and swing speeds.
So, you might ask yourself, should you play the Pro V1 and Pro V1x?
Both Pro V1 and Pro V1x deliver extraordinary distance, the best scoring performance for all golfers, and long lasting durability, yet differ in feel, long game spin and flight.
Pro V1 has a softer feel, slightly more long game spin and a more penetrating trajectory for a shallower angle of descent for more roll than Pro V1x. Pro V1 is a three-piece, multiple component technology with a very soft compression ZG process core, ionomeric casing layer, softer thermoset urethane elastomer cover, and spherically-tiled 352 tetrahedral dimple design.
Pro V1x has a slightly firmer feel and lower long game spin and launches higher with a steeper angle of descent than Pro V1. Pro V1x is a four-piece, multi-component technology with a ZG process dual core, ionomeric casing layer, softer thermoset urethane elastomer cover and spherically-tiled 328 tetrahedral dimple design.

PUMA introduces TITANTOUR footwear
CARLSBAD, Calif. – PUMA Golf has announced the release of its new TITANTOUR golf footwear.
Designed to be the coolest shoe in golf, the TITANTOUR features revolutionary, temperature-regulating Outlast® Technology along with a sleek, eye-catching silhouette for a tour performance golf shoe with industry-leading comfort and style.
Outlast Certified Space Technology was originally developed for NASA to maintain a comfortable temperature in spacesuits. Now, PUMA Golf brings this technology to the golf course with TITANTOUR. The strategic placement of Outlast in the sockliner top cloth is designed to proactively manage heat while controlling the production of moisture before it begins. Foot temperature is regulated through phase-change materials that absorb, store and release heat for optimal thermal comfort.
“Once again, we are pushing the limits of footwear innovation and style. The TITANTOUR provides even greater comfort for the golfer by proactively regulating heat and reacting to changes in conditions and foot temperature,” said PUMA Golf Head of Footwear Grant Knudson.
“The fit, feel and performance of the new TITANTOUR shoes are specifically designed to meet the needs of all golfers at the highest level.”
The TITANTOUR also features PowerFrame Technology – an ultra-thin TPU frame encases the EVA midsole for lightweight strength, extreme durability, increased flexibility and superior traction, combined with external TPU Heel Support, to provide greater stability and ground contact for additional force and power during a swing.
Combining performance with style, the upper touts a sleek design that is made of full-grain, ultra-premium leather for a soft feel and sophisticated look while PowerVamp across the forefoot reduces stretch over time and provides increased stability. The upper and insole come equipped with ShapeLock memory foam for a customized fit, long-lasting comfort and cushioning with every step.
“The new TITANTOUR shoe provides all the performance, comfort, cooling and support that I need in a golf shoe, but better yet it has a look and feel that really fits my style on course,” said COBRA PUMA GOLF Tour Professional Rickie Fowler. “PUMA Golf continues to make shoes that help me perform on Tour and keep me one-step ahead of my competition.”
New, low-profile Stealth cleats utilize K5 for long-lasting abrasion resistance, while strategically placed walls of secondary traction surround and work with the removable cleats for unrivaled traction and stability. The outsole features anatomically positioned flex grooves that allow the foot to move naturally while providing the necessary support.
The TITANTOUR (MSRP $220 CDN) is available in four color combinations—Black-White; White- Vibrant Orange; White-Black and the new Flash colorway, made of reflective material. All colours hit golf retailers starting February 1, 2015 and offer a two year waterproof guarantee.

A 103-year-old Florida man cards hole-in-one
A 103-year-old Florida golfer has made history, becoming the oldest known person to record a hole-in-one.
Gus Andreone, a member of the PGA of America, achieved his special feat December 17th, 2014 at the Palm Aire Country Club in Sarasota.
His friends watched in disbelief as his drive on the 113-yard 14th hole on the Lakes Course rolled into the cup.
“I always hit the ball short with the driver and it rolls up on the green,” he told MyFox Tampa Bay.
The PGA of America said it is likely Andreone is the oldest person to ever sink a hole-in-one. The association’s website said the apparent previous record holder was Elsie McLean who aced a hole in 2007 when she was 102.
Andreone plays golf three times a week. He recorded his first hole-in-one 75 years ago. He now has done it eight times and looks forward to doing it again.
“I am going to to play golf as long as I can,” he said. “As long as I can swing a club, even if I have to play three or four holes, I’m going to play golf.”

HAWAII FIVE-O
A friendship in Hawaii has led to Michelle Wie making her first cameo on a television series.
Wie met actor Daniel Dae Kim through mutual friends in Hawaii – Wie was born and raised in Honolulu, while Kim has been living in paradise with his wife and children toward the latter years of his role in the miniseries “Lost.”
Kim played in Wie’s charity Ping-Pong event after she won an LPGA Tour event in Hawaii this year. He was working on a movie in Atlanta in June when he drove over to Pinehurst No. 2 to watch Wie win her first major at the U.S. Women’s Open.
That led to Wie getting a small part in an episode of “Hawaii 5-0,” on which Kim plays Chin Ho Kelly. Wie shot the episode this weekend while in Hawaii. Still unknown is her role, although agent Jamie Kuhn says Wie is playing herself.
Wie took an Instagram sitting in a director’s chair, flashing the “hang loose” sign and adding, “Officially an actress now” with three emoticons crying of laughter.

From polos to stripes
Garrett Rank, the 2014 Men’s Mid-Amateur champion, will be officiating his first NHL game on January 15, 2015, between the Buffalo Sabres and the Minnesota Wild.
The Elmira, Ont. native signed an NHL officiating contract in late July and has been working American Hockey League (AHL) games since the start of the 2014/15 season.
Having spent the entire 2013/14 campaign officiating in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the 27-year-old seems both excited and nervous for his debut at the pro level.
“The nerves are going to be flowing for sure but I’m really excited for it,” said Rank. “It’s something I’ve been working on for the past four or five years and I’m sure I’ll have a smile on my face and be pretty happy when I’m out there.”
According to Rank, his aspirations of becoming a professional golfer have not expired.
“I’ll have my summers off and I still play a bunch of tournaments. … I haven’t given up on the golf dream; it’s just taking a back seat at the moment.”
The former National Amateur team member is expected to tee it up at next year’s RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey, having earned an exemption for the PGA Tour event with his Mid-Am victory earlier this year.
Scott soon to be a father:
Adam Scott announced on Friday that he and his wife, Marie Kojzar, are expecting their first child in February 2015.
Following this week’s Australian PGA, the 2013 Masters champion plans to take a break from competitive play until the birth of his child.
The 34-year-old understands that certain challenges exist with raising an infant, while touring the globe.
“We’re not going to be in one place very long, at the moment, so it’s going to be a traveling baby and have to do with a makeshift bed for the time being,” said Scott.
Iconic cypress topples on Pebble Beach’s 18th hole:
One of the most famous trees in golf took a tumble yesterday, as 40 mile per hour winds swept through the Monterey peninsula.
The cypress tree on the right side of the 18th fairway, which was planted in 2004, will no longer frame the tee shot for golfers as they come down the stretch.
This marks the second time in as many years that an iconic golf course tree has been destroyed by a storm.
Last year, Augusta was forced to remove its beloved Eisenhower tree on 17, after an ice storm ripped through the area.
The Range Ball Bandit:
Nathan Brown, 27, was taken into police custody last week, after he admitted to stealing a large amount of golf balls from the Golfport driving range in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
Police have since released details concerning the case, claiming that Brown purportedly stole 42,000 range balls from the site, using the veil of nighttime to accomplish the task.
According to the report, 2,000 of the balls have been recovered and returned, leaving 40,000 balls unaccounted for in the general Missouri area.
Hoosier Madness:
Jeff Overton just cannot stop getting into trouble around NCAA basketball games.
The Hooisers alumnus was allegedly thrown out of the Dec. 9 Indiana-Louisville basketball game at Madison Square Garden for causing a disruption.
This is not the first time that the 31-year-old has gotten into trouble for disorderly conduct.
According to the Evansville Courier and Press, the Evansville, Ind. native was arrested and released on $500 bail for resisting law enforcement, public intoxication and disorderly conduct, following an Indiana-Kentucky game in 2011.
