Two-time defending champion, Shauna Liu leads Canadian Junior Girls division by four
CALEDON, Ont. – Team Ontario fired a collective 3-under on Thursday morning to capture the Inter-Provincial Team title at the 2026 Canadian Junior Girls Championship, presented by BDO at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley (Heathlands Course) in Caledon, Ont.
Sunny skies replaced the dark clouds and rain of Wednesday allowing the field to complete their second rounds shortly before 12 p.m. Team Ontario was led by Alexis Card of Cambridge, Ont. who shot a 4-under 67 on Thursday morning along with teammate Avery Nordman of Ottawa, Ont. who carded a 1-over 72 to propel Ontario to a combined score of 4-over to top first round leaders, Team Alberta by nine. Andrea Lai of St. Thomas, Ont. finished her round with a 5-over 76. The win gives Team Ontario three inter-provincial team titles in the past five years at the Canadian Junior Girls Championship.
“It feels amazing, knowing I was able to represent Ontario at the national level feels awesome. We’ve played together many times, we’re very good friends, so being able to do this with them feels very special,” said Nordman on winning the team title alongside her close friends.
Lai added, “it’s amazing that we got to represent Ontario with the girls and knowing that we took home the win and being behind, it feels amazing.”
Card echoed her teammates “it’s really special, to come out and feel comfortable around these girls and to do it together, it’s amazing.”
Card was on pace for a bogey free second round, with five birdies before dropping a stroke on no. 18 to close with a 4-under and put her within two of round two solo leader and two-time defending champion Shauna Liu of Maple, Ont.
Liu resumed her second round early on Thursday and grabbed seven birdies to also close with a 4-under 67. Eileen Park of Red Deer, Alta. who won the national championship in 2023 moved into a tie for third with Evelyn Ma of Markham, Ont. at 3-under.
The third round began at 1:30 p.m. with 74 players advancing to the final two rounds following a cutline of 15-over.
Liu was in the final grouping and after a birdie, bogey start, she recorded six consecutive pars before heading to nine where an impressive run began. Liu birdied to close her front nine and went onto record six birdies through seven holes, including four consecutive from no. 12 through 15.
“I started my round struggling with my shots and found it on nine and then as I made my birdies and I had that momentum going,” said Liu. “I was striping the ball pretty nicely, hit quite a few close approach shots today and sunk quite a few putts.”
Liu closed with three straight pars to finish with a 6-under 65 to move to 12-under for the championship, four ahead of her playing partner, Card.
Liu returned to the course early Thursday morning to finish her second round with 12 holes remaining. She added with her experience she is able to adjust and ensure she doesn’t tire herself out when having to play more than 18 holes in a day during tournaments.
Liu enters Friday’s final round in the lead and in pursuit of a third consecutive Canadian Junior Girls Championship, a feat that has only been accomplished three times. If she were to emerge victorious on Friday, Liu would join Canadian Golf Hall of Famers, Sandra Post (1964-66) and Gail Harvey Moore (1958-60) as well as Heather Kuzmich (1982-84) as the only players to three-peat in tournament history.
Liu entered the final round in 2024 as co-leader and chased the lead in 2025, while she will begin play as the leader, it will not change her approach in pursuit of a third consecutive national championship.
“Stick to what I’ve been doing. I said I can still do better, and I still believe in that, and I still think that I could do better than I did today,” added Liu.
Right behind Liu is Card also enjoyed a strong back nine with five birdies including two consecutive to close her round with a 4-under 67 to move to 8-under for the tournament.
Evelyn Ma of Markham, Ont. put together another solid round finishing the day with a 2-under 69 to sit alone in third at 5-under.
In the Juvenile division, Card holds a three-shot lead over Ma in the race of the Florence Harvey Trophy. Players in the field under the age of 17 as of August 1, 2026 are eligible to compete in the Juvenile division.
The Canadian Junior Girls Championship was first contested in 1955 and operated by the former Canadian Ladies Association (CLGA) until the amalgamation of CLGA and Royal Canadian Golf Association (now Golf Canada) in 2005.
The Canadian Junior Girls Championship has a long list of distinguished past champions that have etched their name on the Brokenshire Trophy. Past champions include Canadian Golf Hall of Famers Lisa Meldrum (2000), Alena Sharp (1999), Sandra Post (1964-66), Betty Stanhope (1956), Judy Darling (1957), Gail Harvey Moore (1958-1960) and Gayle Borthwick (1961). LPGA Tour players Maude-Aimée Leblanc (2006), Brooke Henderson (2012) and Maddie Szeryk (2013) also lifted the Brokenshire Trophy. Stollery Family Team Canada Women’s Head Coach Salimah Mussani (1996, 1998) is also a past Canadian Junior Girls Champion.
The 2026 Canadian Junior Girls champion will receive an exemption into the 113th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship and both the 2027 Canadian Junior Girls Championship and 2027 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship, if eligible.
